CATERPILLAR GENERATOR SET

Another unique piece that we were able to acquire was a Caterpillar Diesel Generator Set.  This unit was used as a backup generator in Load Line 4 of the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant near Grand Island, Nebraska.  The unit was generously donated to the Camp Creek Threshers in the Spring of 2000 by the Nebraska Southern Public Power District.  Pictured below is the generator set and control panel as it was installed in the Load Line 4 boiler room.

This generator will be a great asset to the organization since it will be used to provide the electricity for the Cleaver-Brooks boiler.  This is because 3 phase electricity is not available at the organization's grounds.  The generator will also be unique because it will itself be an operating exhibit on display for visitors to the grounds to view.  We have been told that this 1960's vintage generator itself is not very common so we have a great opportunity to operate and display this unique piece of equipment.

This generator will make the steam exhibit about more than just the steam engines themselves.  First will be the generator which can be viewed supplying electricity for the boiler.  The boiler can then be viewed in operation supplying the steam for the engines in the main exhibit building.  Finally, visitors will view the large steam engines and steam accessories themselves operating.  Below is a listing of the Generator specifications, as well as an article which appeared Southern Public Power District newsletter in May of 2000.
